Technology transfer agreement between DRDO, US firm on the anvil

  • A technology transfer agreement is on the anvil between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and an American firm for the explosive detection kit (EDK) developed by DRDO. A Defence Ministry release said in New Delhi today, the Americans have their own EDK kits but the foreign technology is less effective than the Indian version.
  • This EDK can be used to identify a range of explosives. The kit can be easily carried to the spot and can be useful both before and after a blast.
  • When the explosive substance is mixed with the different chemical reagents given in the kit, it indicates the explosive material used in the bomb.
  • Costing about 5,000 rupees, the kit is being widely used by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads of the army, paramilitary and state police in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
